March 26th 2008 09:52
We have seen numerous amounts of sequels flood the film market over the past year, films such as the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy, The Bourne Ultimatum, Rocky 6, Oceans 13, Rambo 4, the list goes on. If you’ve enjoyed all of these recently release titles, then the future of film has a sweet treat installed for you. There are countless sequels in the making that hit our screens shortly however, will they be as successful as their predecessors?
One of the biggest trilogies of all time is preparing to suit up for another adventure. In 1993, Steven Spielberg began a dynasty known to everyone as Jurassic Park. An action thriller that put humans on an island with predators that haven’t existed in over a billion years, Jurassic Park would open a window to a different world for film creators. It would star Sam Neil, Laura Dern and Jeff Goldblum and help build the triumphs of its next two films The Lost World: Jurassic Park and Jurassic Park 3 around these three actors. Jurassic Park 4 is just in the script writing stage by William Monahan who wrote The Kingdom of Heaven and The Departed, but already it has being forecasted for greatness. Laura Dern as Dr. Ellie Sattler is the only actor to be cast thus far and it is expected that she will be surrounded in the company of new actors and characters. The film is set to be released in 2009.
The Fast and the Furious was released at a time when street racing was immense all over the world, and it’s about to become a lot bigger with the release of its new sequel to Tokyo Drift. If you weren’t into the drifting scene then you’ll be happy to know that the franchise has discarded that idea, and converted back to its safe haven of street racing. The film will reunite stars Paul Walker and Vin Diesel since their original The Fast and the Furious, along side Michelle Rodriguez who played Vin Diesel’s characters girlfriend. Walker who starred in The Fast and the Furious and 2 Fast 2 Furious was said not to be interested in the Tokyo Drift script but is excited with this upcoming screenplay. Vin Diesel starred in The Fast and the Furious but skipped its sequel because of his contractual agreements on another film. He also had a cameo in Tokyo Drift. The plot of the film begins with Walkers character Brian, helping the FBI stop a heroin importer Braga, by teaming up with Diesels character Dominic to infiltrate their gang. Fresh from their stint in prison, they find out one of their friends was murdered by Braga and must go undercover again. The film currently has no official title will be directed by Justin Lin who directed Tokyo Drift and is presently filming.
One of the biggest comic books ever made by Marvel, X Men is set to release another film after their blockbuster trilogy X-Men, X-Men 2 and X-Men 3: The Last Stand. The new film will be called X-Men Origins: Wolverine, it will feature Hugh Jackman who has starred in the previous trilogy, Ryan Reynolds, and Liev Schreiber as Sabre Tooth. It will also feature the long awaited character of Gambit who will be played by Taylor Kitsch, who was in Friday Night Lights. The status of the film is filming and will be directed by relatively new director Gavin Wood. The plot of this film takes a look at the time of Jackman’s character Wolverine/Logan in the Mutant X program before he joined the X-Men. A massive performance from Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool is on the cards and is picked to have his own spin off from this film. It is set to be released in May of 2009.
The remade film The Italian Job from 2003 is set to bring out its sequel called The Brazilian Job. The script is currently being created for the movie but sees the same crew from The Italian Job head off to Rio De Janeiro to operate yet another heist. Is it set to star Mark Wahlberg, Mos Def, Charlize Theron, Seth Green, and Jason Statham who incidentally has two more sequels in the making. The third of the Transporters is in the filming stage while the movie Crank 2: High Voltage is in its preproduction stage.
The animated film Madagascar, featuring four zoo animals is about to set their sale in a different direction in their sequel Madagascar: The Crate Escape. Still stranded on Madagascar, the four find away to leave but unpredictably land in Africa, There Alex played by Ben Stiller meets the rest of his family. The cast of the film involve Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, Jada Pinkett Smith, David Schwimmer, and Sacha Baron Cohen and is set to be released in December 2009. Stiller also has an upcoming sequel Night at a Museum 2: Escape from the Smithsonian starring himself, Hank Azaria, Owen Wilson, and Amy Adams. Madagascar 2: The Crate Escape is set to be released in May 2009.
Only the greatest of films have the honour of an encore, and with the frequency of their occurrence, the movie world is in good condition. We have just scraped the surface of films and their sequels. There are still a number of scripts and productions being set in place for the future films and worth waiting for.
