Dunk Films - by Christopher Waldeck

The Stepfather review

October 22nd 2009 14:35
Daddy's Home!

In terms of acting in a horror movie remake you must give dylan Walsh credit. He carries this film as the insanely creepy stepfather who murders families that disappoint him. He plays the part so suttle and natural that he doesn't even have to try to hide his evil as it leaves an emotional resonance with you during the entire film. While his performance is great in terms of reprising a horror movie character the film as a whole falls flat.

Cheers to future television seasons

This film had a bad reputation just from the preview and the credits. The director of Prom Queen signed on to direct this film. That right there is enough to request a refund just for making the film. However this film has some good scary and gritty moments. The violence is in your face and the opening scene where you see the stpefather walking out of a house with pure apathy towards his previous family who he had just murdered. It's enough to make anyone hate the character and it is perfectly shot in the exact same style of the remake. The visualization and lighting is brilliant and dark with a monotonous feeling which is good for a build up to a rather exciting climax. Sure some may not have the tastes for it's monotone style, but it's much better in terms of quality from Prom Queen.

sorry all this operating makes me sweaty

The acting is your typical television actors and actresses in rather ordinary parts which hurts the film as it doesn't appear to aim for anything better except for the lines with Dylan Walsh. The most acting of the rest of the cast is Amber Heard who plays the girlfriend of the son(Penn Badgley), and her biggest jobh is to walk around as eye cqandy in a bikini. sela Ward is fine, but could have had some better lines as the mother who is convinced that she's ready to marry Dylan Walsh despite warnings from her friends and sons.

Overall this film could've been great, but sadly they made the stepfather character your basic routine killer after anyone who's onto his identity rather than the killer who only killed based on disappointjment of family values. The other characters all caqtch on to his antics and are after him during the film which lessened the stepfather's supposed higher cleverness that he could outsmart the family.

I enjoyed this film as a rainy day movie, but would have enjoyed it even more if it lessened most of it's flaws. Overall it's alright.
