Snipes Jailed
April 25th 2008 11:03
In Florida, a very apologetic Wesley Snipes who has starred in films such as the Blade trilogy, White Men Can’t Jump and Rising Sun was sentenced to three years jail time after being convicted in February of three misdemeanour counts for wilfully failing to file US income tax returns from 1999 through to 2001. Snipes said “I am very sorry for my mistakes and errors”, and told the judge “This will never happen again”. Snipes read a prepared statement describing himself as an “idealist, naive, passionate, truth-seeking, spiritual-seeking artist”. His lawyers tried to give three envelopes to the court containing a total of five million dollars but the judge and the prosecutor said they could not accept it was later collected by the IRS.
US District Judge William Terrell Hodges said prison officials would Snipes when he can begin serving his sentence. Snipe's has said he will appeal his sentence but prosecutors have said they will oppose any request to allow him to remain free on bail while his appeal is pending. Prosecutors have also said that Snipes had earned more then 38 million dollars since 1999 but still had not filed tax returns from 1999 to 2007. When asked why he didn’t pay his taxes when he makes so much he replied “That’s a good question”. Snipe's was acquitted of two felony charges of filing false claims and fraud in seeking millions of dollars of refunds in previous tax years. Snipes brought character references such as Denzel Washington and Woody Harrelson to his defence while his lawyer Linda Moreno argued he had otherwise lived “an otherwise exemplary life”. Moreno also argued that Snipes owed only 400,000 dollars for the years related to his conviction and should not be jailed. Moreno also used precedents from the Willie Nelson case where the singer owed up to 17 million. We are still yet to see if the IRS will make levy penalties and charge interest on top of the tax owing.
