Roman Polanski arrested in Switzerland

September 27th 2009 16:33
In the latest chapter of the career of Roman Polanski it appears that he has been arrested by swiss authorities on order of the United States. He was planning on attending the zurich Film Festival where he was to receive an honorary award when he was arrested Saturday at the airport, the Swiss Justice Ministry said in a statement.

Apparently U.S. authorities have sought the arrest of Roman Polanski around the world since 2005. Guido Balmer let the Associated Press know that they knew when and where Polanski was coming. this is the apparent reason as to why he was taken into custody. now the u.s. has to make a formal extradition request. a spokesman for the U.S. Justice Department in Washington D.C. did not immediately return calls on the case.

Polanski's French lawyer is trying to have the arrest warrant lifted and believes that it's "too early to know," if Polanski would be extradited or not. Balmer has still yet to announce why Polanski wasn't arrested in switzerland before, where he has often traveled or stayed.

Polanski fled the United States in 1978, a year after pleading guilty to unlawful sexual intercourse with an underage girl. Polanski has made bids to throw out the case, but the judge have refused saying that the director failed to appear in court to press his request, however the judge did say that there was substantial misconduct in the handling of the original case.

The swiss statement have said that Polanski is in detention, but he's not yet been transferred to the U.S. until the proceedings are complete.

At least the film festival still intends to honor Mr. Polanski for his film achievements. it's certainly more honorable than the WWE refusing to honor chris Benoit for his wrestling achievements because of his murder suicide.

Well let's all try to remember Polanski for his film achievements and I know that he's one of the best and most artistic directors, so he's left a good record on his film resume. Let's just see what happens and I bet HBO will be airing plenty of reruns of Roman Polanski: Wanted and desired.
