Dunk Films - by Christopher Waldeck

Review of Dario argento's Giallo

October 4th 2009 01:55
Do you know what's funnier than the fact that I misspelled review during my review of Zombieland? it's this movie. Yes a movie from Dario Argento is actually so unintentionally hilarious that it makes for one of the most entertaining films this year. If only it was scary, but sadly it's not as this film is more of a joke and a tribute to the genre of Giallo which gave Dario Argento his fame.

This film is about a detective played by Adrien Brody who is investigating the kidnapping and eventual murders of models committed by a rubber faced killer known as "Yellow", which is hilarious because the guy doesn't look like he has a rubber face at all. it begins with the kidnapping of a pretty dancer and then a famous model. However her sister was on the other line and persuades the detective to investigate this heinous crime in order to save her sister. Adrien Brody is suffering from haunting flashbacks of his own as a child which make the case even harder to solve.

Well sadly there isn't anything really special about this film except that it's a complete spoof and tribute of the Giallo genre. the problem is that it doesn't blur the line enough and it feels like an entire spoof. This film is entertaining in that retrospective especially with some really bad dialogue that makes you laugh especially when you see Adrien Brody trying to keep a straight serious face while saying the lines. There had to be at least a dozen retakes because even I probably couldn't have stayed serious during these lines even if my job depended on it. Hopefully I'll learn to do so I can be a greta actor one day. The film at least has the old elements of an Argento film including the creepy flashbacks and the close up shot of the knife impaling latex skin which is always awesome in a shocking way. Other than that the elements soon grow tired and the film just ends up stale which is a real shame considering how good Argento films used to be. If you're expecting usual Argento than you will be disappointed, but if you're looking for an entertaining despite being clearly flawed film see this film because at least it's entertaining.
