Dunk Films - by Christopher Waldeck

Red Sands review

July 8th 2009 21:12
I recently watched the sequel to Dead Birds an above average indie horror flick that actually delivered on the creep factor. Alex Turner returned to direct a sequel to Dead birds, but unlike Dead Birds this one fell flat. Here is the trailer

<object width="560" height="340"><param name="movie" Really Long Link name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed Really Long Link type="application/x-shockwave -flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="560" height="340"></embed></object>

While i found the other one to be original and creative, I was hoping to feel the same way about this film, but no instead of a western like horror thriller we get a modern day Iraq war setting. God knows how successful movies involving the Iraq War have been lately. It simply didn't deliver and it tried to mix a political setting which didn't work either.

It starts off by explaining the origin of the genie and how it hides from humans because it despises them. The genie is known as the Djin which was created by the gods. This had me interested because it based off of mythology which is always cool.

Then we meet our soldiers. I seriously hope these guys aren't really representing our country. The spirit is released when one of the soldiers shoots a statue believed to contain a Djiin, despite being told not too. Yeah thats a smart move to shoot a statue containing a killer even after your sergeant just told you not to shoot it.

Well as you can predict the Djin arrives in disguise which completely blows away any twist, but it does a great job of creating tension and irony for the audience as you know who the djin is and every mistake the soldiers make as they turn against each other.

The CGI effects are wreak, but the make up effects are awesome especially the flash back with a soldier who had his head blown off by a bullet. It's amazingly creepy and realistic while the CGI looks like a cheesy video game cartoon. For once, the sci fi channel could've made an original movie that looked better than this.

In my opinion if there was one movie to skip because it's a disappointment. It would have to be this movie. It had so much potential, but it threw it all away.

Cheers for the warning, cos I almost rented it the other day, after watching, enjoying and reviewing Dead Birds ... I think I'll give this one a miss now.
