Public Enemies review

Personally, I was satisfied with this film, but not as impressed as I should have been by it. You can easily tell this was a Micheal Mann film by it's real time filming. It is the same style he has developed for Collateral and Miami Vice. Thank god this movie wasn't Miami Vice.
Micheal Mann weaved a story that the author of the John Dillinger novel said that this movie was more accurate to Dillinger's story than any possible movie that could have been made about him.
This film had great style and perfect setting and effects. the shootouts looked so real and the robberies looked very convincing. However, you may be so glued to the style that you might not notice how bland the script is. It is predictable and dull. the actors had to read those lines and really improvise to bring any emotion or feeling out of it.
I personally thought that Johnny Depp played Dillinger way too cool and didn't capture his earthly nature, but he is so mesmerizing in the part that you tend to forget. Christian Bale was alright and tried his best at a southern accent. he still borrows his low voice from The Dark Knight. I was very disappointed that Marion Cotillard didn't get a bigger role in this movie. In every scene that she was in, I was mesmerized by her more than the other actors. She stole the show from right under Bale and Depp in my opinion, like James Franco did from Seth Rogen in the Pineapple Express.
Overall, you'll be too drawn to the style and visual nature to notice many of the films flaws, but the film still succeeds at being more exhilarating and entertaining throughout its overlong length. in most of Mann's films you are trying to remain conscious through the middle, but this film had more action to keep you awake.
This was a huge improvement from Miami Vice.
My final rating is:
B
