Dunk Films - by Christopher Waldeck

My life in Ruins review

June 7th 2009 15:03
The last time I saw my Big Fat Greek wedding, I was amazed by how many people rushed to see a sweet romantic comedy that was well written and witty. It was just a small independent film that related to a lot of people and so it was successful. I had no idea this film would go on to become the blockbuster that it did. In fact I don't believe that the critics did either.

Now we see Vardalos trying her luck or perhaps trying to hard to repeat the success with my life in Ruins, which is interestingly enough was shot on location at the legendary Acropolis. If your into seeing the beautiful scenery which is probably this films biggest asset, then its a good bargain because you save yourself hundreds of dollars traveling just to see it in person. However, if your going to see a movie for its quality don't bother.

For a film that has a decent cast and a decent script surely didn't live up on the big screen. A script that was originally written by Mike Reiss of the Simpsons movie this film lacks comedy. The script was also retooled by Vardalos in order to make it another My Big Fat Greek Wedding. I'm not solely blaming Vardalos, but I think this may have been a cause as to why the film floundered with a formulaic script, and why it feels so dated. This film also stars Richard Dreyfuss who maintains his respect in the film, though I don't know why he's still acting in these films. if you want to see Dreyfuss in a good performance watch him as Dick Cheney in W. He alone made that movie worth watching. however he can't save this formulaic and dreadful film.

Well if your looking for a film just to view quality scenery and beautiful images then watch this film. That is probably the one valuable asset of the movie The cell too, which is a much better film than this. Once again if your looking for a good comedy and a good movie in general watch the Hangover or Drag me to hell.
