Dunk Films - by Christopher Waldeck

my five favorite summer movies so far

July 20th 2009 23:31
As of this summer there have been movies that made me happy and others that made me want to kick myself in the face, by wondering why in the name of god would they waste their time making this movie. However, the movies that were good I really enjoyed so allow me to name my favorite summer films so far in the order of 5 to 1.

5. Bruno. You can blast this movie for not living up to Borat, but the fact is that Sacha Baron Cohen is the only actor whose willing to go so far in his movies. He created this character and he makes this character a mix of annoying and hilarious at the same time just to prove a point. This social satire was remarkable in a way that it went over the top and it satirized the hypocrisy of tolerance towards gay people and it was brilliant in it's trashing of modern day celebrities and publicity stunts.

4. Public Enemies. This stylish Michael Mann film about the life of John Dillinger really captivated me and amazed me with its ability to look like it was in real time without looking cheesy. Marion Cotillard stole the show as Dillinger's girlfriend, but it was the style and visuals that made the film feel unique. This is the best Michael Mann film in ages. It is also the most historically accurate depiction of the man's life.

3. Star trek. This movie I already knew was going to be amazing, but when I saw it on the big screen. It was even better than I ad anticipated. Zachary Quinto played an awesome Spock. J.J. Abrams directed a masterpiece of emotion and twist on a classic concept. This film is the best adaptation of any television series since Star Trek 2 the Wrath of Khan.

2. The Hangover. Remember that film that everyone believed would suck when the trailer came out and made it look incredibly stupid. That was this movie. The trailer lowered so many expectations that people went into the theaters and were amazed by how good it really was. Alan will go down in history as one of the best comedy characters of all time. The cameo by Mike Tyson was so weird and hilarious that one would think it was a funny David Lynch movie. We had Jeffrey Tambor and Heather graham in a movie which is always good to see them in mainstream movies again. this movie was this year's Forty Year Old virgin. It was the surprise hit of the summer.

1. Drag Me to Hell. Sam Raimi returned and gave us a reason to love horror again with this horror blockbuster spectacle. he really pulled out his old stuff and made it fresh to the audiences. This film was a great horror film and one of the best movies of Sam Raimi's career and a quality horror movie. Any commercial director hired to direct a feature length horror film should take notes on how to make a horror film the way that its meant to be.
