Movies out this week
July 31st 2009 13:08
This week we have three widely different movies coming out this week. We have a dark dramatic comedy with Judd Apatow in Funny People. We have a sadistic horror film called the collector and we have some random kids film called Aliens in the attic that will only make money for tweens who worship Ashley Tisdale or kids who actually enjoyed the ridiculous trailer. This is obviously the marketing ploy of the movie, and considering the fact the it hasn't been screened for critics makes me assume what I had already assumed awhile ago that this film sucks.
Funny People will likely be number one at the box office based on judd Apatow's reputation and popularity along with Adam Sandler and Seth Rogen pairing together which is a very good concept with two of the most popular comedians. This film pokes fun at most of Sandler's old work which is always hilarious and true at the same time, as it pokes fun at most of his worst work which he has sold out on. Plus we have many other talents being used differently including Jason Schwartzman and Eric Bana as well as the returning Leslie Mann and Jonah Hill who are frequently in Judd Apatow movies. However, this movie showcases a lot of judd Apatow's family which makes me think it will end up more like a reality show which I pray to god is not true. Either that or he's trying to be a Smith and get his children starring in movies. Anyway the film is receiving mixed reviews on metacritic and positive reviews on yahoo movies. I'll check this one out anyway, but from what I've heard it's not as good as many other Judd Apatow movies, but it's better than his produced Year One that's for sure.
Aliens in the attic is well your basic kids movie with a Disney channel star in order to make more money. No matter how hard Hollywood tries to get reporters to make it look like Ashley Tisdale is shading away her Disney image. We have movies like this to prove they are hypocrites. No early critic screening says that this film is not good, but you just have to watch the trailer to figure that out.
The Collector is a sadistic and bloody horror movie that actually looks like it could be good. It's had some early critic screenings where the critics enjoyed it, and it's the directorial debut of one of the writers of Saw 3-5, and Feast. Hopefully, this is actually a good horror movie so I don't remain disappointed until I see halloween 2.
