John Carpenter's Halloween review
August 25th 2009 16:40
The eerie opening music and the amazing filmmaking used on it's low budget makes this film an incredibly successful and profitable horror classic. John Carpenter used a William Shatner mask and left the rest of the terror and blood offscreen to make us scream and wail in terror when we didn't even see most of the vilonce. This proves that what you don't see is always scarier.
This film introduced us to the horror legend Michael Myers who murders his sister and he's sent to a mental asylum where he escapes the care of Dr. Loomis and goes on a killing spree in order to kill his younger sister Laurie strode played by Jamie Lee Curtis in an awesome debut performance. On the journey many of Laurie's friends are murdered before Laurie and Dr. Loomis stop his killing spree or so they think.
This film will forever be remembered for it's creepy score, haunting killer, and the great atmosphere in a simple storyline that worked beautifully. Carpenter's timing on the score is perfect and the camerawork is top notch. The performance by the late great Donald Pleasance will cement his legacy as a horror icon and a legend of film.
If only Rob Zombie hadn't seen this movie so we wouldn't have had to see this movie remade and turning michael Meyers from a cold, remorseless monster and into a man who beats up bullies.
