Jennifer's Body review: oh what this film could've been.
September 19th 2009 18:45
Well my spirits are down because Jennifer's Body was a bit of a let down. I was really hoping that this film could put more focus and reputation back in the horror genre, but I was sadly mistaken. this film isn't really horror or dark comedy or even a comedy. it's just a muddled teen drama that has good emotional resonance about two friends, it just has the quirky dialogue of Diablo Cody, and some decent gore scenes.
The film is about needy who tries to stop her friend Jennifer from eating boys after she becomes possessed by a demon thanks to a moron indie band who get their rituals off of google and are clearly oblivious to any logic. Megan Fox who plays Jennifer continues a rampage through town killing boys and feeding off of them in order to remain young, while needy who begins to realize her true hateful feelings for Jennifer looks for ways to kill her.
This film spins in many different directions. the opening part with Needy in the psychiatric ward and the burning of the bar with the abduction of Jennifer was going great until it completely changed directions. For a screenwriter who won and academy award for screenwriting should know that this film failed when it came to the fundamentals. It became so muddled that I forgot what genre I was watching. One moment it's satire then dark comedy and then it's supposed to be horror, but delivers no scares. The scary scenes are all made laughable with the patented Diablo Cody dialogue.
I will point out some good parts of this film. It's very original and the humor is ironic for certain parts like the indie band, the Juno cameos, and the relationship between Jennifer and Needy. This film shows the transformation of Needy's character very well and it is plenty twisted in the story. In fact Amanda Seyfried is the entire movie as Needy. she carries it beautifully from start to finish. Megan fox is perfectly cast as Jennifer and she doesn't have to try to hard acting wise because the character was written for her well. If you're expecting tons of nudity you'll be disappointed. This film tricked you with the trailer much like Kubrick with Eyes Wide Shut. The blood is fine, but not as insanely graphic as I was hoping for yet it was still satisfying. It was campy and cool, but not in the same way as Drag Me to Hell.

My grandmother and I were talking about this movie yesterday. We couldn't figure out from the commercial what it was about, and after watching it three times we decided it just looked stupid.
From what you've said the concept is a good one but it's also one that's hard to get right. Indeed, it sounds like it would be better as a dark comedy than an attempt at serious horror.
I'm glad I know what the movie's about now, 'cause I was trying to figure that out, and I'm glad I didn't spend the $10 on a movie ticket to see it.

Thank you for your comment and I'm glad that I could help. this movie isn't bad it's just a bit mixed up. It could've been a lot worse, but thankfully it wasn't.
I would like to say that I hope Diablo cody actually makes another horror film, but if she does she should try to focus it directly on horror, and if it's a dark comedy it should be listed as a dark comedy. she has plenty of talent, just a little mixed up on the genre.
Everyone had good performances though especially through the dialogue written by Diablo Cody. If you want to see good Diablo Cody check out her new show on Showtime.
Thank you for leaving your comments.
