5 Greatest Films Ever
April 8th 2008 11:49
It has been debated strenuously since the very beginning of the introduction of films, which feature is the cherry on the cake? Many people have given their own interpretations in constructing their own rankings but have failed with criticism from every direction, and in doing so asking another question, who knows better, the film critic or the viewers? This article summarises information given from both film critics, and the viewers to illustrate which film is greater then them all.
Ranking in at number five is arguably the most successful movie of all time in terms of awards and achievements. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King is the third instalment in the Lord of the Rings saga. In 2004, this epic took home a staggering 11 Oscars for Best Achievement in Sound Mixing, Best Art Direction-Set Decoration, Best Costume Design, Best Director, Best Editing, Best Makeup, Best Music for an Original Score, Best Music for an Original Song, Best Picture, Best Visual Effects, and Best Writing and Adapted Screenplay. The film winning every category it was nominated in. The movie is based on the novel written by J.R.R Tokien and turned into a screenplay by Fran Walsh, who later went on to write King Kong. It exemplifies a wide range of acting talent including such names as Viggo Mortensen, Orlando Bloom, Elijah Wood, Ian McKellen, Sean Astin, Hugo Weaving and Cate Blanchett. The film has being given a rating by film critics of 8.8 out of 10 and piling up 246,402 votes from the public.
At number four is perhaps the most noticeable and well known movie in history, and the beginning of George Lucas’s empire enterprise. Star Wars was released in 1977 and took the world by storm in an epic that would continue for thirty years. It would win six Oscars for Best Art Direction-Set Decoration, Best Costume Design, Best Effects and Visual Effects, Best Film Editing, Best Music for an Original Score, and Best Sound. Also, it would be nominated for four more Oscars in the categories of Best Actor in a Supporting Role, Best Director, Best Picture, and Best Writing, Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen. The only epic to begin filming halfway through its storyline, Lucas later confirmed that this was due to waiting for future technological advances. This film stars Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, and James Earl Jones. Star Wars was given a rating of 8.8 and received 234,121 votes from the viewers. These figures are quite similar to the Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King if not slightly lower, however given the impact this film has had in the movie industry, it was only right that it held a slight edge.
Slotting in at number three is the 1994 Quentin Tarantino classic Pulp Fiction. This film would go on to win one Oscar for Best Writing, Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen but would be nominated for six Oscars in the categories of Best Actor in a Leading Role, Best Actor in a Supporting Role, Best Actress in a Supporting Role, Best Director, Best Film Editing, and Best Picture. Pulp Fiction would sky rocket John Travolta, Samuel L. Jackson, Bruce Willis and Uma Thurman into the spot light of Hollywood, and still to this day these actors tribute some of their success to this film, it would also signal the arrival of the unique writer/director Quentin Tarantino. Film critics have rated this film as 8.9 out of ten and receiving 275,859 votes have earned it a secure spot at number three.
At number two is the insight into the world of the mafia in The Godfather. The 1972 crime/drama would be one of the greatest screenplays ever written but would be equally as strong with the casting starring Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, James Caan, Robert Duvall, Dianne Keaton and Talia Shire. The Godfather would win three Oscars including Best Actor in a Leading Role, Best Picture, and Best Writing, Screenplay Based on Material from Another Medium. The screenplay would be written by Mario Puzo, who also wrote Superman and is directed by Francis Ford Coppola, who would continue on to direct Godfather 2 and 3. The rating of the movie from film critics is 9.1 and received 271,427 votes from viewers.
At number one, the greatest movie ever made in 1994 is a drama known as the Shawshank Redemption. This film would be written and directed by Frank Darabont, who also wrote the screenplay to the Green Mile. It would be nominated for seven Oscars in the categories of Best Actor in a Leading Role, Best Cinematography, Best Film Editing, Best Music for an Original Score, Best Picture, Best Sound, Best Writing, and Best Writing, Screenplay Based on Material from Another Medium, ironically making it the only film on this list without an Oscar win, and stars Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman in the leading roles. The Shawshank Redemption has being given a rating of 9.1 from film critics and a staggering 324,026 votes.
Over a period of 80 years, we have being able to narrow down a list of five films thriving in every facet of the movie industry to have the honor a being named in the top five films of all time. All of these selected films have had a great impact in the film organization, and has raised the bar to amazing heights for any competitors.

That said, Pulp and The Godfather would be somewhere in my top twenty - a list I absolutely can't pin down, of personal favourites, which as you say would probably be ripped to shreds by others with differing personal favourites!
