Dunk Films - by Christopher Waldeck

Bruno review

July 10th 2009 21:41
Well this is indeed the dirtiest comedy out this summer. This is the final character that Sacha baron Cohen is adapting from his cult classic Da Ali G show. Hopefully, he'll do a movie like this with Ali G to make up for the straight to DVD disaster that the last Ali G show movie was.

This film is once again directed by Larry Charles who also directed Borat, so the style is almost exactly like Borat except Bruno is a completely different character. While Borat was a sexist and anti-semitic Kazakh TV show news host, Bruno is a gay Austrian journalist who after being blacklisted by the Viennese fashion scene. He decides to go to los Angeles to become a celebrity.

This is a movie that only Sacha baron Cohen can pull off. It's a social satire of how people view gay stereotypes. Almost every gay joke that teenagers and prematurely adolescent boys, and conservatives can imagine is acted out in this film. Which is quite ironic seeing as though we can joke around about this subject matter yet when we see it on screen we are repulsed.

This film was an NC-17 that was reduced to an R rating after censoring several moments of male nudity. This film was still really over the top on the content, it just had the male body parts censored, except for several instances. This film has graphic nudity and loads of sexual and crude content, but it succeeds extremely well in it's goal. It's amazing to see Sacha Baron Cohen improvise as much as he does in the non scripted moments of the film which are a plenty. It starts to lose its touch during several moments that you can tell are blatantly scripted.

Overall I'd say that its not as funny as Borat, but it easily beats Borat when it comes to dirty content. This film will be fumed at by conservatives and soccer moms around the world, which is doing nothing but fueling young teenagers and adults determination to see it. It will be interesting to see if someone can actually realize that this film was making fun of everyone whose homophobic and intolerant towards Gay people and if they can realize that this film is making fun of their hypocrisy and fame culture on how people get famous, which can be directed at any reality TV show star or any celebrity who bases their fame on publicity stunts like sex tapes for instance.
