Brothers review

Well this week we have another great film about family ties especially during the war in Jim Sheridan's Brothers. Yes this is a remake which makes it even better that it's a remake that actually delivers. It stars Tobey Macguire, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Natalie Portman. Tobey Macguire stars as Sam, a soldier who goes to war while his wife and kids are at home. Jake plays his brother Tommy. decides to make up his image after being arrested for armed robbery by repairing the kitchen for Sam's wife Grace. During this tme Sam's helicopter crashes and he is presumed dead and Tommy helps console with his wife Grace. Tommy becomes close to Sam's kids and even shares one passionate kiss with Grace. The relationship ends quickly after it. Then Sam comes home to discover things are different and he seems paranoid and cold.
This film is very well done and with great performances from the actors. There are times were some performances seemed slightly miscast, but that all ends when their dark performances kick in. It's great to see a film about the soldiers and the price of war with a great family connection theme to go along with it. This is easily the best mainstream release this week. it's great to see Tobey Macguire in a lead performance again other than Spiderman.
It's just too bad that this film probably won't see a greta box office due to it's theme and the conservative views of the war from the mainstream audience. At least this film has more of a family heart to it than your average shoot em up war flick. This film is a must see for a good drama and a well intentioned film especially since the hurt locker couldn't get a mainstream reaction there needs to be a good war drama without a specific agenda.
