Boot Camp review

The latest film to star Mila Kunis and feature the massively overused Unrated label has hit DVD. It's actually a decent film and it makes me wonder why this movie couldn't go to theaters yet dreck like the Ugly Truth can. Well it's studio decisions I guess which as usual doesn't surprise me.
First of all this film hardly deserves and unrated label as it's basically an R rated film. It's got less blood than Jaws it just has enough brutality to be considered an R rated film. It stars Mila Kunis as a teenager who is very rebellious and her parents decide to send her to a camp in order to get her back in order. This camp is run by an evil Peter Stormare who encourages the patients to commit brutal acts and berate each other. The abuse is depraved and insulting, but that only makes the film more effective. After awhile Mila Kunis's boyfriend comes to the island by faking a heroin addiction. He decides to attempt to break mila kunis out of the camp.
This film features Mila Kunis briefly nude and in a sexual encounter which is not necessary which adds to that old saying of critics hate unnecessary sexual scenes, however I'm not a professional critic so it doesn't phase me as much. It was however slightly unnecessary here. I'm not sure why mila kunis doesn't get really good roles because she can act better than most actresses. She shows us her tough and emotional side in this movie rather than a wooden performance in max Payne or her usual comedy moments in her comedy resume. it's interesting to see her in this part and she impresses me greatly as she proves that she can handle darker character.
The film itselof is alright. it's nothing really special or anything spectacular, but it's an interesting take on a social issue and it's effective at what it aims to be. So it might not be a critical darling, but it will have it's own special place on DVD along with the other films that deserve better. However be warned it is disturbing in nature which is why most critics will likely squander it sadly.
