Dunk Films - by Christopher Waldeck

Best new horror movies to watch on Halloween so far.

October 7th 2009 18:47

Since most gore hounds and sheep will flock to see another Saw film of the torture porn saga that refuses to die or become original in anyway except via a tired twist plot, I decided to make a list of new horror filsm that should watch from your television or in most cases on DVD.

Here's my list.

He's gonna steal more than just your candy!

1. Trick R Treat.

Michael Dougherty's masterpiece of a horror gem is one of the many great filsm unfairly shoved in a straight to DVD bin despite being a masterpiece. This crazy, gorey, creepy and hilarious trip back to 80's horror style makes the perfect movie to watch with your date as well as by yourself in case you decide to bite your date while pretending to be a vampire.

2. The Hills Run Red
That's no Babyface!

Alright so it's far from a masterpiece and it includes mostly just the average torture porn horror film style, but at leats it doesn't try to be more than gorey and campy fun. Isn't that why we all go see horror anyway? Oh yeah and Sophie Monk's in it. Enough said.

3.Drag Me To Hell.
I bet your regretting the day you denied her a bank loan.

For all of you so called horror fans who didn't see this marvelous film in theaters you now have the chance to see it on DVD. It will shock you and make you roll with laughter. I'm not joking you'll roll. This film has gross gags a plenty and an awesome fight scene in a car that sets new standards for comic horror violence in films. i'm still mnot sure how this was a PG-13, but at least it uses the most of it's rating and then some. Now you know why Borat was afraid of gypsies after you see this film from Sam Raimi. It's almost enough to forgive him for Spiderman 3.

4. Grace.
That better be Fruit Punch

A film that will really get under your skin with it's gross car and blood in a bottle being fed to a kid. This film may not be a total horror action films with jumps and jolts like drag me to hell, but at least it can make you cringe in your seats even with the poster. name a movie that can honestly make you gag with a simple poster.

5. Wrong Turn 3

Left for dead is an understatement.

This campy cannibal movie series started off kinda low with wrong Turn, but still impressed with it's awesome gore effects and violence. the sequel was campy, but flowed with blood, humor and nudity plus Henry Rollins. Now we have the third installment which could be really good if they simply follow the way of the Worng Turn sequel which was surprisingly better than Worng Turn itself. Well at least this campy back woods story won't be wretched liek the hills Have Eyes remakes and sequels.

Let me hear your thoughts and opinions.

Hey, I envy your geographical position to some degree in that you have movies being released in your neck o' the woods before mine, so you occasionally preempt my blog. I should think of it as healthy competition I guess, but I wish movies were released simultaneously around the world (which only happens on rare occasions) so that critics reviews of current releases all came out around the same time. I'm really looking forward to both Trick R Treat and Grace. I have to totally disagree with your take on Wrong Turn though. I thought the first was very good (a couple of reservations), but I thought the sequel was dreadful, regardless of Henry Rollins "cult of personality" ... I have no interest in seeing the third installment. And I actually really enjoyed Aja's remake of The Hills Have Eyes, but loathed the remake sequel. The Hills Run Red looks mildly interesting ... And I will agree with you on Drag Me To Hell.

Hi Chris,

I am really looking forward to Grace, looks like an uncomfortable journey.

I am ashamed to have not seen Drag Me To Hell yet, but that will be rectified in the first week of its DVD release.

I haven't decided what Im watching this hallows eve, but 'trick r Treat will probably make the cut.

Hey byron

I can understand how the geography affects the time of reviews. I'm glad to hear though that your looking forward to Trick r Treat and Grace. Trick R Treat is far better though, but Grace is very uncomfortable to some degree. i wish many films were released at the same everywhere as well that way audiences would've seen Rec instead of Quarantine.

Chris, "Byron"?? Ha! That's a new one.
I'm not sure if Trick R Treat will be available to see before Halloween is upon us down under. Fingers crossed!
I gather then that [REC] had a delayed release in America?
Quarantine was made very soon after the Spanish original, probably one of the fastest turn arounds of a Hollywood remake ever. I actually rate the remake very highly, and in some scenes actually more effective than the original, which surprised me. For me Quarantine is one of those very rare Hollywood remakes that is as good, if not better than the original (like Zack Snyder's Dawn of the Dead, which I prefer over Romero's original).
On a separate note, what does your blog title Dunk Films actually refer to?

Lol! Byrn I had a class where we were studying old poetry and one of the poet's name was Lord Byron so i got the names mistaken. yes Rec had a straight to DVD release in America and is now sold on shelves as the movie that inspired Quarantine. i'll agree that it was better than it could've been, but I prefer Rec and the new Rec 2 is going to be more action horror than just horror.

The name Dunk Films is actually just the name of the blog that I took over because I got an upgrade from orble because the author had not written on the blog in 60 days so I just think it's a creative name.

i think Zack Snyder's version is great, but the score will never compare to the original's score of the goblins and Dario Argento.

Chris, for the record, the name's BRYN, not Byrn. Why so many people are dyslexic when it comes to spelling my name I'll never know. Bryn, is a Welsh name, so the "y" acts as an "i", thus pronounced as "Brin" ...

Goblin did indeed create a great score for Dawn of the Dead, I have it on vinyl. Their best work is the soundtracks to Deep Red, Suspiria and Tenebre.
