REVIEW: Bee Movie

April 25th 2008 05:11
The Action/Comedy Bee Movie stars a remarkable cast with Jerry Seinfeld in his first role since his hit TV sitcom Seinfeld, Renee Zellweger, Mathew Broderick, Patrick Warburton, John Goodman, Chris Rock, Cathy Bates, Larry King, Oprah Winfrey, Ray Liotta, Sting, and Rip Torn. The film is a Dream Works production, it is directed by Steve Hickner and Simon J. Smith, written by Jerry Seinfeld and Spike Feresten, and is rated PG. Bee Movie has been nominated for a Golden Globe for best animated film and brought in 287 million at the box office worldwide.

The well named film Bee Movie centres on a bee named Barry B. Benson, played by Jerry Seinfeld in his crusade for regaining all the honey in the world. After discovering that the job he’ll undertake in the colony will be his responsibility for the rest of his days, Barry searches for something more to his life. When he is challenged to soar out into the world with the pollen jocks, the ambitious bee does not hesitate but in doing so, he breaks the cardinal rule of the beedom by speaking to a human played by Renee Zellweger. In a series of chain events, Barry finds that humans are stealing honey from the bees, and successfully launches civil action against the entire human race, stripping them of all the honey in the world. When the colony goes into honey overload, it shuts down its factories and the bees after working everyday of their life are now reduced to boredom. In a chain reaction, all the flowers in the world begin to die off due to the bees no longer collecting the pollen, Barry understands his mistakes and hatch’s a plan to bring back life to all flowers.

Bee Movie has been built up as a promising animated comedy, heavily marketed as the first Seinfeld production since his hit sitcom and with cameo’s from Chris Rock, Oprah Winfrey, Ray Liotta and Sting, you would have been forgiven for thinking that this is a ground breaking film, how ever through all of its hype, I don’t believe it lived up to its expectations being simular to Antz and A Bug’s Life. Seinfeld has said publicly that he created the film around the title Bee Movie which can sometimes lead to trouble but that wasn’t the problem with this film, shockingly the film just wasn’t as funny as anticipated. There are two types of funny gags that are used in comedy, you have your hilarious funny which is your gold material, and you have your chuckle funny which is the comic relief in between. Unfortunately there wasn’t enough hilarious and too much chuckle. Also the plot of the film wasn’t really that strong, scientifically if you were an expert in biology, you would be a bit disappointed. Bee Movie is a movie you would watch once due to the cast, but not twice.
