After Dark Horrorfest
June 18th 2009 15:49
By the end of this week I'll have reviewed all of the after Dark Horrorfest for 2009. these are the films deemed to scary aka graphic for General audiences. I'll be reviewing them based on their ability to actually deliver scares. If they are indeed more than just B-movies, and if any of them would actually have a chance of going to theaters if the censorship wasn't so high on movies.
I'll be reviewing them in this order:
From Within
Slaughter
Dying Breed
Voices
Perkins 14
The broken
Autopsy
The Butterfly Effect 3 Revelations
If there are any gorehounds out there then they'll be delighted to hear about these goretastic new films. The best part about this festival is that they don't play by the normal mainstream horror rules

to be honest, I'm not impressed with the majority of AfterDark's movies. On the whole they're crap. With very few exceptions. However, contrary to this the two that I've seen from this year's selection, Dying Breed and The Broken, are amongst the rare few. The Broken is awesome, I've already ordered my own copy on DVD. Dying Breed is above average, not amazing, worth a look, some good moments.
The whole excuse about the festival about the movies being too extreme for mainstream cinema release is absolute bullshit. A total marketing ploy to provide low-budget (for the most part) movies the chance of a screening at theatres rather than straight to DVD. What the criteria is for selection I have no idea. It's tenuous at best.
I'm curious to know what your thoughts are on the selection, especially the two I've seen. The Festival doesn't screen in Australia, but some of the titles make their way onto DVD down under.
We have an awesome local festival of our own, A Night of Horror international film festival, which just had its third annual programme. I saw some fantastic cinema incl. Left Bank, I Will never Die Alone and The Broken was included. Some fantastic short films as well including AM1200 and The Red Room.
