Academy Awards changes amount of nominations for Best Picture
July 6th 2009 15:15
The Academy Awards apparently are increasing how many stars and movies are nominated for a specific award. Now this could be a really good thing and at the same time a really bad thing. For years people have been saying that there need to be more nominations so certain movies can be nominated into the mix while others have said that the less movies the better.
If there were more nominations then we could see many more mainstream films in the nomination box, we could have seen The Dark knight nominated for best picture which should have been nominated in the first place if it wasn't for the full of themselves Academy Awards voters. We could see more art house films nominated not that the Academy can tell the difference, but at least maybe they'll have a chance and foreign films that lose the foreign film nomination could be nominated. This could also help other categories of awards and actors and actresses get more recognition. This works really well for the actresses and actors who are deserving, but can't make the tight space.
However this could also be a bad move because more nominations may lower the value of an academy award if more than five movies are nominated. The more limited the titles equals the more prestigious of awards. It's like basic economics not that any of our top entertainment officials in California or new York know too much about good economics or any business ethic for that matter, but that should all change once they understand what a budget is.
So i'm interested in hearing my readers thoughts. i would like my readers to post as many comments as possible or messages as to your opinion of the Academy's new move.
Hopefully the Oscars are at least entertaining with the extended time this year or else it'll feel like watching a dull and boring final cut of Alexander Revisited.
